At U.S. HealthWorks Medical Group, we have over 200 locations dedicated to keeping you and your employees healthy. In addition to everyday issues that need to be treated, there is sometimes a need to perform executive physicals for key employees to provide proactive treatment and ensure they can fulfill the critical tasks of their job. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about executive physicals.
What is an Executive Physical?
An executive physical is a comprehensive one-day exam that is personalized to a busy business executive’s schedule, lifestyle, and health concerns. Many companies have been adding executive physicals to their Occupational Medicine offerings for senior or top employees as a tool to improve productively and attract talent.
What is included in an executive physical?
An executive physical is a customized examination for executives based on the employer’s needs that combines a comprehensive review of the individual’s medical history with advanced testing. There are a number of exams included and often it involves seeing more than one specialist throughout the day.
The following are typical, but not guaranteed, elements of an executive physical:
- Comprehensive health assessment and review of medical history
- Full range of preventive screening tests
- Cardiovascular counseling
- Review of medications and immunizations
- Lifestyle assessment
- In-depth, one-on-one review with your personal executive health physician
- Dedicated appointment coordinators to ensure your appointments are scheduled efficiently
- Dedicated insurance coordinators to file claims on your behalf and work with insurance carriers to resolve claims
The testing for an executive physical may go beyond generally recommended exams, and sometimes there are risks, such as participating in a full body CAT scan or finding false positives among the test results.
How much does an executive physical cost?
Generally, the employer covers the costs of an executive physical, not the employee or insurance provider. The anticipated cost to an employer for an executive physical is $1,000 to $5,000.
How long does an executive physical take?
Most executive physicals take 1 day to perform all the exams. Some test results for executive physicals will be available the same day and others will be reported shortly after the exam, either via phone, electronically, or during an in-person follow up. There are some executive physicals that can last from 2-3 days depending on the number of tests and who is performing the exam.
Why is an executive physical better than a regular physical?
Executive physicals are different from regular physicals, not better. Most standard physicals are focused on treatment of symptoms. Executive physicals can look for issues beyond those displaying symptoms, including discussions about preventative medicine, and can provide piece of mind for the employee and company. The scope of an executive physical is typically much broader than a standard one. Medical opinions vary on the effectiveness of such wide-ranging exams and some of these tests may not be effective in screening patients who do not exhibit symptoms.
Who should consider an executive physical?
Any company who has staff or management that are integral to the business and want to ensure that they will be available for work. Some elements of an executive physical may differ from a standard employee physical due to what the specific employee is tasked with. For instance, a focus may be given to how to prepare for and recover from international travel, or how to effectively work across multiple time zones, in addition to standard assessments related to diet and lifestyle. Executive physicals can help companies ensure continuity and retention across all aspects of their business. In more recent years, however, there has been a growing trend of people switching to concierge-style medicine rather than executive physicals.
Does insurance cover an executive physical?
Normally insurance does not cover an executive physical.
Executive physicals have seen growing interest in the past few years, along with other aspects of personalized and concierge medicine.
